Need a little advice… seems everyone i talk to tells a diffrent story. i'm looking for a dirt bike. i will be using it to play arround in forestry, dunes, trails etc. i'm not looking to race, but it'd be nice to gas it and hit a jump. i'm only looking to spend about $1500.00 as this is my first bike and i'd hate to lay down a $5k machine. i'm looking at the 250's. i am undecided as to 2 vs 4 stroke and model. it seems hard to find a 4 stroke in my price range. i dont mind maintenence but i don't want to have to deal with adjustments while i'm on the trail. i just want a good bike i can play with… one that wont make me wish i had bought a diffrent or better one right away. weight range of the rider will be 160 lbs. the hardest part of selecting is that i have only ridden about 1 hour on a bike so i cannot got out test driving bikes as i wouldnt know what to look for.any non bias input would be great!

Honestly you will have to look around and ask individuals or sales people. i had in the past a 2 stroke honda cr125, i loved it, now i have a 4 stroke suzuki dr250. basically a street legal dirt bike, it doesnt seem to have as much power as my 125 did but it does have equal power throughout the rpm range where as my 125 only had great power in high rpms during the powerband, all and all if it is trail riding and a little motocross and you want something cheap and easy to work on i would go with a 2 stroke, top end rebuilds are very easy to do, and there are plenty of shops around the country that work on 2 and 4 stroke motors. good luck!!
My cousin has a dirt bike and when you turn it on, if its in neutral or the clutch is in, you have to keep accelerating for the bike to stay on, should dirt bikes be like that, do they run better like that, i would say maybe that it's meant for racing bikes because if it was for FMX (freestyle motocross) bikes then when in the air, their bike would turn off.
There is nothing wrong with the bike, its not dirty or anything like that, it has been added on the bike to be like that, just letting you know.

Is it a 2 stroke or 4 stroke.
generally 2 strokes aren't supposed to idle so they won't foul sparkplugs.

If your riding in the wet, this is quite common, check your pipes for kinks mate, check your airfilter is clean, if your riding in mud, you shouldnt have a K&n air filter
better off with a 2stage foam filter, keeps out mud more.
Also handy if you clean your carb, special unleaded can help with this, also other products, as someone else said, might have a bad batch of fuel.
Make sure your choke is off.
If its a 2 stroke, make sure you have the right petrol and oil mixture.
If its 4 stroke, make sure theres some good 4st oil in the engine
I am 20 years old, 150lbs and 6 foot. I have never been on a dirt bike but I am in the market to buy one that will please my needs.
Between 125 and 250 2 strokes, afraid the 250 might be too much power for my novice skill, while the 125 i may grow out of very quickly
any inputs ?

NO dont get a 250 2 stroke you will kill yourself!
even a 125 2 stroke is 2 much power but if someone teaches ya youl be fine
Go for 125 or mabey a 100cc
You should learn on 4 stroke
take care
It needs to be 1000 dollars or less. i think i want a 4 stroke 125. i need it to be dependable and need almost no matinence. i will be jumping stuff but no more than 10 feet.

Motorcycles have several sections in Yahoo! answers, and this is NOT one of them. It's all about pedal power here.
Shame on you who answer questions posted in the incorrect catagory
And why?

On new honda quads FMF performs the best also on 4 stroke dirt bikes.. Yamaha performs the best with white bros. e-series.
REMEMBER if you dont get the power kit in the carbs the pipes wont perform….

Hey i want start riding and havent got really any expe- im 16 and 5,9, i do dh mountain biking so im fit. i have been told to get a honda xr100 or go for thumpstar.

The XR100 and the Thumpstar would be really small for you unless you just want to do pit bike racing or something. If you are looking at new bikes the Honda CRF230F would be the perfect size and power to learn on. If you are looking for an older bike the XR200 would work also. You really want to learn on a 4 stroke so don't let anyone talk you into a 125 2 stroke.
Well I've been thinking about getting a dirt bike and I'm a big guy and don't know what size would be good for me I havn't weighed myself in ever but I would have to say I'm between 250 and 300 probably closer to 300 but not sure any one know what size bike I should get like as in engine or anything idk any one have any suggestions?

Speaking as a big guy, if you're in it for trail riding DRZ400, WR450F, or CRF450X. The last 2 are more for a racing style but a 400 4 stroke would be good, motocross ..beginner 250 2-stroke (YZ250 or CR250) mainly because they are easier to work on than a 4-stroke. I personally would not recommend a 125 2-stroke or a 250 4-stroke because of your size… lets just say the zero to 60 quotient is a high number. But the first thing I would do, new springs front and back (100 dollars an end) would be a must (like I said, speaking as a big guy, I didnt do that and I ended up w/ a decent wreck) and maybe a taller seat, lower pegs and a highbend handlebar. If you get the 2-stroke and you are a beginner, I'd either get a bigger flywheel or get a bike w/ not much of a power hit. You could get an exhaust pipe that controls that (FMF Gnarly w/ Turbine Core 2 of Q2 silencer). 4-Strokes dont have that much of a hit but are really torquey, the trade off is that they are hard to work on but now are much easier to find aftermarket parts for because thats the way the industry is going. With any bike you get, buy a Clymer service manual, trust me, its a must. Hope this helps
I've narrowed it down to 2 bikes, th crf 230f or the kx 100. I live on a farm and wont be motorcross racing, but i love to open the bike up and just fly down the country roads or in the pastures. Right now i just dont know which one to get. I want something that can accelerate fast, but is reliable with less maintenence.

Go with the Honda. In my opinion, the 4 stroke will be better suited as an all around bike, and that model still has the speed and power when you need it.
Years 01-06

For atvs there are very little to chose from in the 2 stroke side in those years. i prefer 4 strokes, and the entire industry is going to 4 strokes wether anyone likes it or not. the liberal EPA has seen to that.
