A 125cc two-stroke or a 250cc four-stroke would be a good choice for your age and weight. Choosing between a two and four stroke is mostly based on personal preference. Each has their own advantage and disadvantage over the other. The most obvious difference is that two-strokes require you mix your oil with your gas. However Two-strokes are also lighter than four-strokes and have a much simpler design. It usually costs less to modify and repair a two-stroke engine than a four-stroke engine. But two-strokes can also be finicky and a lot less forgiving than a four-stroke if you don't know how to tune it properly. four-strokes also have a more user friendly powerband, they tend to make more power than two-strokes on lower RPM's so it's much easier to putt around and go as opposed to a two-stroke which tends to like being revved high. I personally prefer a two-stroke over a four. But you need to decide which would suit your needs better.

Choosing a brand of bike is the same also, whether it's Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki or KTM. All manufacturers have their advantages and disadvantages over the other. Just keep in mind there's nothing that will affect performance, handling and reliability more than how you set your bike up, and how good of a rider you are. I've had friends on modified 250's and 450's get spanked by 8 year olds on 80's for that same reason.

So do some research and see which bike would suit your needs better. Once you buy your bike be sure to also get a repair manual for it and learn how everything works and how to properly set it up. You'll end up being safer, faster, and a better rider.

Good luck with your purchase.

RIGHT HERE ON YAHOO ANSWERS….
I have some enduro experience and im about ready to get a bigger engine than my XR100R. any advice?

Perhaps add a few more details about your height as that makes a difference as at 13 there is a great difference in how tall people are.

Just go along to a dealership and have a sit on a few different bikes to judge how big a bike you can manage. The crf150r is a really great bike and you would be able to race that for a couple more years. If you are really tall you could look at a 4 stroke 250cc.

I have a 1969 honda trail 70….do i need a good battery to get a spark?
Dirt bikes

That would be an SL70 ??

No , Battery Not required , Was only there to run Lights & Horn

Spark is Via a Magneto in the Engine Case .

I have a 2001 yamaha yz250.. what kind of fluid do you put into the radiator??? is it just basic radiator fluid or somethingspecial for dirtbikes?
Dirt bikes

Nothing special. You need to stick with whatever's already in there, or do a good flush. You can get some nasty results if you mix the wrong types. Dexcool is good for high temp engines like a bikes.
I have a kawasaki kdx 80 it starts fine but it idles high then back to normal then super high and does not like to come down then. The bike is older. I am a car mechanic not a bike mechanic. Please help give me all the possible answers you can Thanks

My first guess is an intake leak. The gasket between the carb and the engine is probably broken, cracked, or just worn out. This is the first place to check.

Typically, that means water is leaking into the oil compartment from somewhere. could be head gasket, water pump seal, left it out in the rain with the oil plug off…

although, I have been fooled before with tiny little air bubbles churned into the oil after a very hard ride and I thought it was water… this is typically more of a brownish color like chocolate milk and after sitting a while, it turns back to the almost clear carmel color.

I'm looking at buying a bike, for main use of riding on the road to cut down on gas. Someone I know suggested looking into dirt bikes. I can't afford a bigger bike yet, nor to I want to start out on a real big bike. But what engine size ect. would be best for using it more as a vehicle than Motocross type stuff.

Definitely agree. Try to find a good used 250cc dual sport (dual purpose). Check craigslist and bike trader. Kawasaki KLX250 or Suzuki DR-Z200 would be good choices. Fairly inexpensive used.

The mx650 is taller than the 500 it holds a 220 pound rider where the 500 holds up to 175, the 650 is rated for 16+ years the 500 14+ years. the 500 is a scalled down bike where the 650 is like a regular bike about the size on an 80cc regular bike. They go no where near the speed of a gas engine bike they max out at 17mph which is rather slow. These are electric bikes and are only good for riding on hard ground.
And how important is this towards the bikes over-all performance?

All the parts on a new engine have to wear into fit each other. This is what you are trying to accomplish, on any motorized vehicle whether a dirt bike or a street bike. So change your oil as specified (usually 5-600 miles) and take it in to the dealer as required for service at that point. (Changing the oil is the single most important thing in the early life of your motorcycle, that you can do to extend the life of engine.) When they wear in to fit together nicely they produce a bunch of metal particles and flakes which are only removed from the system by changing your oil. It's important,,so follow the recommendations of your owners manual
